The main goals of this introductory course are for students to become familiar with German sounds and words, be able to introduce themselves and others, and communicate about familiar topics and daily life. Students will be exposed to simple videos, songs, and authentic materials. Students will begin to develop their German proficiency through extensive interaction in the language. Grammar topics will include making subjects and verbs agree in gender and number, word order with modal auxiliary verbs, nominative and accusative cases, and understanding the two modes of address, formal and informal.
The central themes of the course are identity, interests, family, daily life, and culture of German speaking countries. The student learning outcomes of this level are to be able to greet one another; introduce themselves; tell time; express likes and dislikes; ask and answer simple questions; describe their family and friends; name places, pastimes, and preferences; describe weather and seasons; tell what people are doing; and read a menu.
